The modest fishing villages of Aberdeen Harbor stand in stark contrast to the lavish establishments lining Repulse Bay. Aberdeen’s original name was Hong Kong Tsai, and foreigners who landed near the village mistook the village’s name as the name for the entire island; by the time this mistake was realized, the name “Hong Kong” had already stuck. However, the glitzy shopping centers and high-rises Hong Kong is known for never took root in Aberdeen, and while the spirit of commercial advancement swept across the region Aberdeen retained its unassuming character.
Set out across the harbor aboard a sampan for a closer look into the life of the local fishermen. A floating fishing village formed by a fleet of old fishing junks is inhabited by thousands of locals, and these humble accommodations contrast dramatically with the modern high-rises and yacht clubs visible in the backdrop.
