Dazu Rock Carvings

Located in the Chongqing municipality and about 60 kilometres from Chongqing city centre are the Dazu Rock Carvings, located on the Beishan and Baoding Mountains. They’ve been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. This Dazu site of 75 protected areas, house large groups of ancient carvings and statues, all inspired by Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian beliefs and philosophies. They are depictions of everyday life in China at the time of the Tang and Song Dynasties. The oldest carvings date back to around 600 A.D.
The area consists of around 50,000 statues, spread along the site, and over 100,000 carvings can be found in the traditional Chinese script. There are a total of five clusters, the largest one being on Mount Beishan which stretches to around 300 metres. The carvings and statues have been well-preserved and have not suffered much damage from any natural disasters over the years. Even though the various carvings are centuries old, they still retain the spirit of ancient China.
