Located 8 kilometers just outside of the popular and beautiful Yangshuo is the village of Jiuxian. The area of Jiuxian has been inhabited for hundreds of years, dating back to around 700 A.D since the Tang Dynasty and later established as an ancient village around the 16th century. The Jiuxian ancient village is one of the last places around Yangshuo that still has some preserved mud brick farm houses as well as grey brick mansions.
Upon entering the village there are courtyards and alleyways to wander through, including an ancestral hall and some traditional dwellings. These preserved buildings can be seen with a walk around the village and the locals are welcoming to the guests passing through to observe their unique and ancient village. The surrounding countryside mixed with the traditional architecture makes for a pleasant stroll and first-class photography opportunities.
Set with the Yulong river to the east and the backdrop of Yangshuo’s karst peaks to the west, Jiuxian is an excellent place to venture a little off the main trail, along Yangshuo’s infamous cycling path.
