Tengchong County is located in the Baoshan prefecture of western Yunnan province. The area is well-known for it’s volcanoes and various volcanic activity.
As Tengchong shares a close border with Myanmar to the west, the two areas have been important trading partners for centuries. Tengchong was one of the regions in southwest China to develop first and many of it’s locals have traveled and lived abroad for commercial purposes. It’s been a center for trade since the Ming Dynasty and was a main stop on the ancient Silk Road.
Tengchong is famous for it’s agriculture and tea. It also boasts plenty of geothermal heat and as well as numerous minerals and stones such as jade. The town is home to a number of jade markets. The main ethnic minority is the Lisu.
